Cave Castle in its present form was built in 1875. There was however, an ancient fortification on this site mentioned in the Doomsday book 1086 and many fine buildings existed in between times. The Castle was bought by the Barnard family in 1748 and the house in its various forms remained in the family until 1925.
Very little is known of earlier buildings but the cellars and an escape tunnel from the nearby Church date back from before 1791. It is said that John Washington Great Grand-father of George Washington (first President of the United States) lived on the Cave Castle Estate prior to emigrating to America.
Towards the end of the Second World, Cave Castle was used as an Officers Mess and barracks built in the grounds housed prisoners of war. Since then the Castle has flourished as a Hotel.
In most recent times, refurbishment and extension have added an excellent 18 hole golf course and a building of health and leisure suites. In 2005, we launched a suite of 28 contemporary deluxe bedrooms and the “Courtyard” coffee shop. All this making The Cave Castle Hotel & Country Club a major force within the local hotel and leisure market.
The Hotel, with such extensive facilities, is a must for every type of event. Our reputation as a banqueting venue is second to none; with wedding receptions being a speciality.
We are delighted to play host to many corporate meetings which range in size from 2 to 250 and include both day and residential events. On top of all this, our award winning Windsor Restaurant is open every evening for a truly exceptional dining experience.
